We are pleased to announce that the Mongolian National Committee for the UNESCO-International Hydrological Program /UNESCO-IHP/ and Ministry of Nature and Environment of Mongolia are organizing the International conference “Uncertainties in Water Resource Management: causes, technologies and consequences”, /WRM-Mon2008/ to be held on 29 September to 3 October 2008 at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel, Ulaanbaatar city, Mongolia in conjunction with the 16th Regional Steering Committee (RSC) Meeting for the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (UNESCO-IHP SEAP).
The aims of the International Conference “Uncertainties in Water Resource Management: causes, technologies and consequences”, /WRM-Mon2008/ are to share and to disseminate knowledge, information and technology in hydrological and water sciences to foster cooperative and collaborative activities in several focal areas as a contribution to the five core Themes of IHP-VII/2008-2013/.
The International Conference WRM-Mon2008 will consist of two-days opening ceremonies and technical sessions (29-30 September), one-day technical visit (1 October), two-days (2-3 October) for the 16th RSC Meeting.
We cordially invite you to participate to these events and/or submit manuscripts related to the conference topics. The detailed information is available in this site and will be updated regularly.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The aims of the International Conference “Uncertainties in Water Resource Management: causes, technologies and consequences” /WRM-Mon2008/are to share and disseminate knowledge, information and experiences in water resources and river basin management sciences and to promote cooperative and collaborative activities in several areas supporting the five core Themes of the IHP-VII (2008-2013).
THEMES AND TOPICS
This conference is also stimulating different regional activities such as APFRIEND and the compilation of Catalogue of Rivers for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
The general conference themes “Uncertainties in Water Resource Management: causes, technologies and consequences” WRM-Mon2008, are devoted to the focal areas of IHPVII as follows:
Theme1: Adapting to the impacts of global changes on river basins and aquifer systems- Focal area 1.1 global changes and feedback mechanisms of hydrological processes in stressed systems,
Focal area 1.2 climate change impacts on the hydrological cycle and consequent impact on water resources,
Focal area 1.3 hydro-hazards, hydrological extremes and water-related disasters,
Focal area 1.4 managing groundwater systems response to global changes,
Focal area 1.5 global chance and climate variability in arid and semi-arid regions
Theme 2: Strengthening water governance for sustainability
Focal area 2.1 cultural, societal and scientific responses to the crises in water governance, Focal area 2.2 capacity development for improved governance, enhanced legislation for wise stewardship of water resources,
Focal area 2.3 governance strategies that enhance affordability and assure financing,
Focal area 2.4 water as a shared responsibility across geographical and social boundaries, Focal area 2.5 resolving the water-energy nexus in basin-wide water resources
Theme 3: Ecohydrology for sustainability
Focal area 3.1 ecological measures to protect and remediate catchments process,
Focal area 3.2 improving ecosystem quality and services by combining structural solutions with ecological biotechnologies,
Focal area 3.3 risk-based environmental management and accounting,
Focal area 3.4 groundwater-dependent ecosystems identification, inventory and assessment

WRM-MON2008 AND 16TH RSC MEETING PROGRAMME
The RSC meeting will be held in conjunction with the International conference “Uncertainties in Water Resource Management: causes, technologies and consequences”, /WRM-Mon2008/ to be held on 29th September to 3rd October 2008 at the Chinggis Khaan Hotel, Ulaanbaatar city.
The International Conference WRM-Mon2008 will consist of two-days opening ceremonies and technical sessions (29-30 September), one-day technical visit (1 October), two-days (2-3 October) for the 16th RSC Meeting.
The meeting for the Humid Tropic Centre Coordination committee will be held between 29 September to 1 October 2008.
PROCEEDINGS
The papers presented in the International Conference will be published as a UNESCO technical document. All conference papers will also be published in CD-Rom.
LANGUAGE
The language of the symposium will be in English. No translating to other languages is available.

Financial support for participants may be available from UNESCO Office, Jakarta, and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
